Just a quick phone call to me, along with the specs of your machine (make, model, and serial number), and I can tell you what kind of RAM your computer shipped with, and how much it can handle in an upgrade. I can source the RAM for you, or give you the specifications so you can find it and buy it yourself, whatever you prefer. I am happy to assist you in this purchase any way I can.

The brands of RAM that I recommend and use are "Crucial", "Micron", "Mushkin", "Corsair", and "OCZ." The reason for the RAM upgrade will often determine which brand of RAM to choose. Hard Drive Upgrade

1956 hard drive
Your Hard Drive is the storage space for your computer system. All applications, documents, files, pictures, music, games, your Operating System, printer drivers — you name it — all these and more are stored here!

Often after a few years has passed from the date of original computer purchase, many people find they have run out of storage space. This can be due to upgrades in application programs which are known Hard Drive hogs — such as Adobe® Creative Suite or Microsoft Office®, for example. Because storage space has been taken up by these applications or increased Operating System files, there is no longer room to store data and other files.

At this point it makes sense to Upgrade the Hard Drive. This is a simple, cost effective way to prolong the life of existing equipment, and is very easy to do. (For those circumstances where the Hard Drive has failed, or is failing, please see my page on Repairs, or Click Here.)

Just a quick phone call to me along with the specs of your computer
(make, model, and serial number), and I can tell you what kind of Hard Drive capacity your equipment shipped with, and how much it can handle in an upgrade.

I can source the Hard Drive for you, or give you the specifications
so you can find it and buy it yourself; whatever you prefer. I am happy to assist you in this purchase any way I can.

PLEASE NOTE: Not all Hard Drives are the same, and it is very important which manufacturer/brand you purchase as some are known in the IT community to be much more prone to errors and failing than others. Please do make sure that you consult with me before purchasing.

Installing a new Hard Drive is not complicated, but does take a little time to disconnect the existing drive, and install the new one. As a general rule it should not take more than an hour to install, and then you are back up and running with plenty of room to multi-task. If you've run out of room, give me a call today for a
FREE Equipment Upgrade Consultation and let's you the room you need so you can enjoy a Happy Computing experience again!

Video/Graphics Card Upgrade

A Video/Graphics Card Upgrade may be needed when you either: (a) upgrade your OS (Operating System), (b) install high definition videos or games, or, (c) install graphic and photo editing software that requires the highest level of visual resolution output possible by your CPU.

The "job" of the Video/Graphics Card is to turn the data your computer recieves into images. You may have noticed upon close inspection that some images displaying on your Monitor (either photos or videos), appear not to be solid, but to be made up of little squares which when combined all together made up the sum total of the image. This is known as "pixelation."

A "pixelated image" may not be the highest resolution output of the image available, but often is as good as it gets if your Video/Graphics Card is outdated or inadequate with regard to the the latest technology.

One Video/Graphics Card that I recommend is the Nvidia 450 Professional Graphics Solution, which according to Nvidia, "runs on just 35 watts, and has two GPUs with eight processors each, which is enough to power four 30" Display Port displays with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels each. (The maximum resolution on four DVI-D displays is 1920 x 1200 each.)"

The Nvidia 450 Professional Graphics Solution Video Card also "integrates 512 MB of memory (2x256 MB)."

This Video/Graphics Card is the one used on the floor of the NY Stock Exchange because of its superior power, resolution, and its functionality which allows up to four monitors to be connected with excellent resolution. The Nvidia 450 Professional Graphics Solution Video Card retails in the range of $325 to $450.

The other brand of Video/Graphics Card that I recommend to my clients is the ATI Radeon HD 5970 Graphics, "the ultimate" Gamers Video Card.

According to the manufacturer, the ATI Radeon HD 5970 Graphics Video Card is "[e]ngineered for speed" and "delivers an unrivaled HD gaming experience" so you can play the latest, most demanding HD titles like never before.

Featuring cutting-edge graphic, display, and memory technology, this next-generation powerhouse delivers unprecedented performance straight out of the box.

The MSRP for the ATI Radeon HD 5970 Graphics Video Card is $599, but due to its extreme performance, many retailers are upping the cost in the range of $625 to $750. If you want the ATI Radeon HD 5970 Graphics Video Card as your replacement Video/Graphics Card, I will search for the very best price I can find and as always, pass the savings on to you along with the original invoice.

Replacing a Video/Graphics Card is a fairly straightforward process that takes somewhere around an hour or less of time. Prior to purchase, take advantage of my FREE Equipment Upgrade Consultation so you will buy the best Video/Graphics Card for your needs, being certain that it is supported by your computer's hardware.

Just provide me the specs of your computer (make, model, and serial number), and your reasons for Upgrading: gaming — movie viewing — graphics and/or photo editing, or any combination of the three and I can tell you what I believe is the best choice of Video/Graphics Card Upgrade that will best suit your needs and your budget.

Please give me a call today and start experiencing your photos, movies, and games like never before!

CPU Chip Upgrade

Your CPU or Central Processing Unit, is the "brains" of your computer. The "Chip" is located on the "central nervous system" of your computer, "the Motherboard."

As the name implies, "the Motherboard" contains all the various microelectronics which make your computer operate via the commands of your Operating System (OS) and Programs/Applications.

The CPU is THE Information Data Processor in your computer, via its complex micro-electronic circuitry. The CPU understands and implements software instructions, mathemmatical calculations and comparisons, makes logical decisions (based on "true" or "false" boolean algebraic statements), keeps track of and follows steps in software programs/applications, and communicates with the other components of the entire computer system.

If you have updated your OS software, or upgraded a powerful graphics editor or "office" type software such as MIcrosoft Office Suite®, you may experience that your computer is lagging in processing commands such as opening files, editing documents and graphics, printing or other multi-function commands. This is a sign that you need to either upgrade your RAM Memory, and/or upgrade your CPU.

The simplest thing to do is to update your RAM Memory, but if you have already upgraded your RAM to the maximum your Motherboard can hold, you will need to upgrade your CPU Chip in order to keep your computer running at top speed for your application programs. Upgrading your CPU Chip, is an easy and affordable upgrade. There are a few qualifiers however, which must be met in order for the Upgrade to be successful.

First, we must determine which new CPU Chip is compatible with your existing Motherboard. This is a FREE SERVICE I offer. All I need is the Make, Model, and Serial Number of your existing computer. Usually there are no incompatibility issues and the new chip can be easily and quickly installed putting you back in business at a much, much faster speed.

In some cases however, a current generation processor will not be compatible with your exisiting Motherboard. In this case an older generation processor may suffice and will eliminate the need to replace your Motherboard. However, if the older generation processor will not give you the kind of processing speed you now need, then your Motherboard will also need to be Upgraded. If the Motherboard needs to be upgraded, we must also then determine if your computer's existing RAM Memory and existing Video/Graphics Card will be compatible with the new Motherboard and CPU Chip.

If the existing RAM Memory and existing Video/Graphics Card are not compatible with the new Motherboard needed to upgrade your CPU Chip, then these also will need to be replaced. At this point, from an ecomomical perspective, it makes more sense to skip upgrading and buy a new computer. This will usually be the case with computers more than six years old. It just isn't economical to put in new parts, when they are available for purchase in a brand new computer package.

For those computers that are three to four years old, or newer, upgrading the CPU Chip makes a lot of sense and can breathe new life into your computer.

If your computer has begun to run slow, and you have the maximum amount of RAM Memory your machine can hold, consider Upgrading your CPU Chip. Just give me your Specs (make, model, & serial number) and I can tell you very quickly if you are a good candidate for a CPU Chip Upgrade.

Installing a CPU Chip is an easy process, that takes less than an hour to complete, keeping labor costs low.

For a small investment in a new CPU Chip you can exchange your "so-so" computer performance for the highest level with lightening fast speed and enhanced satisfaction in your user experience. If you are used to "multi-tasking" while using your computer, with a CPU Chip Upgrade, you can elevate "multi-tasking" to an entirely new art form!

Please give me a call today to Upgrade your CPU and turn your user experience into a Happy Computing one!

Surround Sound Sound Card Upgrade for Music, Home Theater, and Gaming

The quality of sound and how it is perceived is comparable to fine art: the beauty is in the eyes, or, in this case, the ears of the beholder. That being said, there is a difference in sound quality produced by various sound cards available for your computer.

If you are a musician or a serious audiophile, the quality of sound produced by your computer will certainly be a consideration as you listen to and enjoy the nuances of Bach, Beethoven, or Tchaikovsky, for example. For the serious Gamer, sound quality can make the difference as to whether your character wins or loses, lives or dies. And for all of us, nothing is more enjoyable than cozying up on the couch and watching our favorite movies through a Home Theater set-up, experiencing the movie just like we would at the local movie house. All of these features are available through what is known as 3-D Surround Sound.

3-D Surround Sound is a system of speakers, usually two in front and two behind you, plus a "sub-woofer" which captures those really low, "lows." Their placement and function allows the sound to surround you giving you the experience of being right in the middle of the action in a game, or sitting on a chair with the orchestra, or as if you were a character in your favorite movie.

Orignally 3-D Surround Sound was available through only one manufacturer, and was known as "Dolby Surround Sound®." Today there is "digital surround sound" and other manufacturers besides Dolby® make this type of sound available in the marketplace. As might be expected, with Digital Surround Sound you must have Digital Speakers for the sytem to work as it was designed.

There are a few different 3-D Surround Sound sound cards that I recommend to my clients, depending on their needs and the reasons for upgrading their existing sound cards.

  DESKTOPS
For the Audiophile/Musician I recommend the "ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface 124 dB SNR/Headphone Amp Card" (considered the industry leader), which is powered by the "ASUS AV100 High-Definition Sound Processor" (Max. 192KHx/24 Bit), with Dolby Pro-Logic II Audio® and Dolby Digital Live®. This card comes with one 6.30mm input jack, two RCA output jacks, and one 6.30mm output jack.
Whether you choose this card, or another, you can expect the cost for a digital sound card providing this or similar technology to cost you between $75 to $200, depending on the "bells and whistles" you decide you need and want.
For the Gamer and Home Theater enthusiasts I recommend the "PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titantium Fatal1ty Champion Series" sound card. You will hear realistic sound effects with 3D positional audio (due to its "EAX 5.0" technology). Gamers please note: these sound effects are so "accurate", you can locate opponents by sound, even when using normal stereo headphones. For Home Theater enthusiasts, this technology will make you believe you can feel the wind blowing through your hair; the sound is that realistic!

With an "X-Fi I/O" drive you'll have front panel connections for your headphones, headset, and other audio gear. Additionally for the Gamer, the performance in your games is boosted due to the hardware accelerated audio and X-RAM of this sound card.

Whether you choose this particular card, or another, you can expect the cost for a digital sound card providing these types of rich features and high-end technology to cost you between $150 to $250, depending on which features are most important to you.

  fatality sound card

Both of these cards can be easily installed, the process taking less than an hour to complete.

Additionally, it is a very simple to run a connection from your computer to your home sound system and television monitor, giving you a Home Theater or Big Screen experience without the costly outlay for additional equipment.

  LAPTOPS

Laptops require an external sound card through a USB or FireWire connection.

In this case, I recommend "Creative Professional's E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface Sound Card", (Stereo / Hi-Speed USB, 24-bit - 192 kHz - 117 dB SNR).

The E-MU 0404 USB delivers outstanding performance to your Macintosh or Windows PC Laptop, with premium 24-bit / 192 kHz A/D, D/A converters, and pristine XTC pre-amps.

  external laptop sound card

Featuring "plug - and - play" functionality, and signal - to - noise specs that are simply unrivaled by any other USB interface on the market today, the E-MU 0404 USB is my top choice for an external USB Sound Card device for Laptops.

Additionally, the E-MU 0404 USB comes with a "Production Tools" software bundle giving the serious audiophile and musician everything they need to create, record, edit, and master their music.

Whether you choose this External USB sound card, or another providing similar technology, you can expect your new sound card to cost you between $150 to $250, depending on which features are most important to you.

Upgrading your Sound Card is an easy addition to your computer, bringing more richness to your computing experience and greater enhancement and enjoyment of your music and movies.

Please give me a call to discuss your needs for Upgrading your sound card. I am most happy to give you a FREE Evaluation of which card would best suit your needs, determining which ones are most compatible with your current hardware configurations.

FireWire Port Upgrade

firewire logo FireWire® is a data transfer technology developed in 1995 by Apple® to assist in moving digital video data at a faster rate than was available at the time. Today FireWire® is still the fastest way to move data, and has matured beyond its original purpose into supporting a number of different devices or peripherals for computers. FireWire® technology can even be utilized without having a computer involved at all, such as connecting two camcorders together to move video from one to the other, or from a camcorder to an HD TV. For most people however, using FireWire® will involve their computer, even if their computer does not currently have a FireWire® port.

Most computer users are now familiar with a "USB Port" (Universal Serial Bus). Most Desktops and Laptops in use today will have at least one, if not two USB Ports to connect peripheral devices such as a printer, a scanner, a digital camera, or an iPod®.

The biggest difference between USB and FireWire® is the data transfer rate. FireWire® transfers data at a minimum of four times faster than a USB connection can operate.

For those folks with huge video files, music files, or other data intensive files which need an external Hard Drive to store their data, a Hard Drive with a FireWire® Port makes the most sense. This will give you the fastest way to move that data from your computer's internal Hard Drive to the External Drive.

        firewire versus usb
FireWire® is used to connect a wide variety of peripherals, mostly relating to audio and video such as Digital Camcorders, Digital Cameras, HD Televisions, Digital VCRs, DVD Players, Blu-ray Players, External Hard Drives, Scanners, Printers, iPods®, iPhones®, and Digital Speakers.

Macintosh® computers have had a FireWire® Port built-in since 2000, but Windows® PC models did not begin to feature FireWire® until late 2006. Some PC manufacturers only recently (within the last year or so), have begun to offer their Desktops and Laptops for Windows® PCs with a FireWire® Port.

internal firewire port For those computers — either Desktop or Laptop, which do not have a FireWire® Port, there is happily a solution. In either case, a FireWire® Port can easily be installed, internally or externally in a Desktop (depending upon the configuration of your model), and externally in Laptops.

If you recently purchased a digital Camcorder and want to edit your movies in real time, you will need FireWire®. FireWire® features isochronous editing, which means that what you see on your editing screen is also what you see on your TV monitor simultaneously. FireWire PCMCIA card

If you compose digital music and need to store your large digital music files and need to move your files from your music authoring program quickly, an external Hard Drive with FireWire® is the solution for you. If you're setting up a Home Theater System with an HD TV and Digital Speakers, you will need a FireWire® Port to connect everything to your computer's Hard Drive as the source of your Home Theater system.

Another feature of FireWire® is that it is "hot plug-n-play" meaning that you do not need to power off your computer to plug in a peripheral into a FireWire® Port and have it be "live." The peripheral will be "live" on your Desktop and will be turned on and functioning through the FireWire® connection.

Installing a FireWire® Port is an easy process taking less than an hour. Please give me a call with the specs of your comptuer (make, model, and serial number), and I can give you my recommendations on the best FireWire® Port Card for your computer's hardware, and the best price and features for you.
